RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman

Sunday February 2nd 2014

Within a moment that distinctive, deep voice, rich in inflection, complex in character could take you away to another place or into another’s soul. No wonder Paul Thomas Anderson cast Philip Seymour Hoffman as the mellifluous, mesmerising guru in The Master.

It’s so sad that Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead.

The astrology? There’s no birth-time for him, so this chart is set for noon.

His voice has been silenced. Hoffman’s Mercury is at 12° Cancer exactly square his Saturn in Aries. Today that Mercury is opposed by Pluto, a planet which annihilates, and conjuncted by Jupiter, the planet that takes us on to the other side. This current opposition exactly squares Hoffman’s Saturn. He must have been under immense strain. The foundations of his life must have seemed as they were collapsing, and there is a terrible aching loneliness sometimes about Saturn in Aries. With transiting Venus at 13°, it must have been an easy death, floating downstream on mother heroin.

The Sun, giver of life, was opposite his natal Jupiter in Leo; Jupiter in Leo, a great actor.

His voice will live on. Hoffman’s body of work — Magnolia, The Master, The Big Lebowski, The Talented Mr Ripley, Capote, so many great roles — will undoubtedly stand the test of time. He even made bad movies like Mission Impossible III seem good for a moment. His North Node is in Taurus, the sign that rules the throat and the voice.

This is a cruel death. Pluto has struck at Hoffman’s family (Cancer) and his children (Mercury). What a waste.

Grateful for your post on this very sad loss. A tremendous talent. To me anything he was in was worth watching, just to see him bring such depth & complex humanity to the part. A sad day.

  2. Noticing a few friends with Saturn at around 12 degrees Aries going through some tough times!

10 degrees Aries here. Yes, not a fun time to be 46 years old.

    • Christina says:

Yes, the Uranus-Pluto at quincunx to Saturn must generally be hard to handle anyway and now transiting Uranus is on the Saturn electrifying the aspect. None of these are personal planets, of course, but an exact conjunction to natal Saturn has got to be important.

It’s as if there’s no way to turn, but this will pass.

Thanks Christina, he was a truly great actor and it is a terrible shame. I for one feel for him as my chart is achingly similar to his being born just 11 days after he was. I know the pain he must have gone through as I am experiencing very similar transits, my Saturn and Neptune are almost exactly the same and my Sun has been clobbered by inconjuncts from Pluto and Chiron too in recent months. I have battled through but it has not been easy and is not going to get any easier with Pluto at 12 Capricorn. May he rest in peace….

Redrew his chart as I can’t seem to enlarge the above – I note he has pallas conjunct merc too.
Anyway, lovely post Christina. My mind had gone to tr Neptune and that pisces moon; that combo felt strong this weekend. He has Neptune exactly conj Unukalhai natally in Scorpio with Saturn transiting both, and tr Neptune is conjunct Fomalhaut in Pisces. A trine from Mars in Scorp. Those two fixed starts can be associated with addictions. I have a similar setup in my chart and am finding the addiciton issues particularly hard these days. The siren’s song is loud and constant.

I’m stunned – in your February horoscopes you wrote for Leo as last sentence : it’s about the axis body / mind – his mind must have been turned off.

Furthermore the New Moon of 31st. January was at 11 degrees Aquarius (opposite his Jupiter in Leo).

God, do I hate drugs !

    mimi

    • Christina says:

Yes, that New Moon was significant. It was the dark of the moon rather than a shiny new beginning…. And in Aquarius it’s opposite his Leoness — the light went out.

Something I also noticed – he has Osiris at 27 degrees Capricorn, Venus received a kiss from Osiris and then turned and walked back to Pluto – death !!.

      mimi

He also had his reverse nodal return. His south node is conjunct mars as well.

I figured something was going on with his chart for him to die like this. Pluto… If only people knew about their charts I think they would handle things differently.

His Saturn rules the 4th (end of life) and his Mercury rules the 12th (self-undoing). They square each other, like you said – maybe he was down, depressed, and that was the catalyst. (But mabey this isn’t the accurate time of birth?)

    More:

    – progressed mars trine quiron in pisces (drugs);
    – progressed jupiter – 22º Leo – square Neptune (this is triggered by transit Saturn in Scorpio).

  12. Jane says:

I always thought he was early Leo but now I see the Sun was at 29 degrees Cancer—-part of a grand water with Neptune in late Scorpio and Chiron in late Pisces. The ultimate sensitive soul—–
