On Walt Whitman’s Birthday

Saturday May 31st 2014

… and on the subject of great American poets, it’s Walt Whitman’s birthday today. What a marvellous expression of the joyful Gemini soul. This is from the beginning of Leaves of Grass.

Come, said my soul,
Such verses for my Body let us write, (for we are one,)
That should I after return,
Or, long, long hence, in other spheres,
There to some group of mates the chants resuming,
(Tallying Earth’s soil, trees, winds, tumultuous waves,)
Ever with pleas’d smile I may keep on,
Ever and ever yet the verses owning—as, first, I here and now
Signing for Soul and Body, set to them my name

I love the fact that Leaves of Grass is his most famous work — and Ceres, ruler of grain and grassy stuff, conjuncts his Sun exactly in the sign of the balladeer Gemini. It’s also interesting that Song of Myself is his most famous poem yet the Sun is not aspected (except by Ceres). There is though a neat sextile to the ASC.

    This 12th house Virgo, Merc in Libra, Gem MC, Moon cj Whitman’s Mercury loves this bit of his best:
    “I think I could turn and live with the animals, they are so placid and self contained;
    I stand and look at them long and long.
    They do not sweat and whine about their condition;
    They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins;
    They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God;
    Not one is dissatisfied-not one is demented with the mania of owning things;
    Not one kneels to another, nor his kind that lived thousands of years ago;
    Not one is responsible or industrious over the whole earth.”
