Kamala Harris: Joyous and Responsible

Just as the 1960s were bursting into bloom, on the western edge of America, a scientist and an economist named their new baby after the lotus and the goddess, Kamala Devi. Maybe it was the Full Moon riding high in the sky on the evening when she was born that inspired them, or maybe it was the spirit of the time.

The year Kamala Harris was born, the American Civil Rights movement was riding as high as that Full Moon. Martin Luther King won the Nobel Prize that week, the Freedom Summer had just ended, and UC Berkley, where her parents were both working on their doctorates, was the very place where the student activism that would be such a hallmark of the 1960s began with the founding of the Free Speech Movement.

This was the decade when Pluto and Uranus, revolution and transformation conjoined in the sign of Virgo. Africa shook off the colonial yoke, student demos went global, counterculture went do wah diddy, and all the rest of that 60s wail for freedom and self-expression went pop, and probably whizz too.

We have the spirit of the times into which we were born inside us, and Harris was born at the centre of change, the place where many ideas that would influence the next half-century were being born too. Like every Gen Xer, Kamala Harris has that ferocious Pluto-Uranus revolution written on her soul. It’s in the sign of service, Virgo, so well expressed in a dedication to public service. Virgo is associated with the sovereignty of the body, too, so it’s notable and powerful, that one of Harris’ central campaign messages will be about a woman’s right to choose. This very right was being fought for in many countries during that period of the Uranus-Pluto conjunction.

As a Gemini Rising, born on an Aries Full Moon, Harris must relish debate, the swift back and forth of the court-room, the battle of words and ideas. And with that powerful 60s signature softened by Venus, she must have a fine sense of fairness. The Aries Moon makes her comfortable being a pioneer, especially within institutions (11H): she has always been the first woman or the first black person, or both, in her jobs. In her own family, she was also the first American. Her parents came from different sides of the world to meet in a new place and start their family.

She is a natural born communicator, which makes me wonder about the “word salads” she produced a few times as Veep. She should probably get rid of the autocue — too distracting. She doesn’t need it. She is brilliant when she’s just talking, or when she’s in lawyer mode. With Mars in the third, trining that fiery Moon, she’s probably got a very quick mind and rapid recall, as well as a sharp tongue when required. Mercury, the planet of speech, negotiation and communication rules this chart and it’s in analytical, meticulous, razor Scorpio. This Mercury is Scorpio might make her quite scary to work for, because she will see your mistakes. No cover ups.

You can see that Gemini Rising in her physique. She is very youthful, and has the rapid gait and perkiness of a Gemini. Her likeable, political Libra Sun makes a beautiful aspect to the Ascendant, and importantly to her outstandingly powerful Saturn. The teacher planet is in its favourite sign, Aquarius, right on her midheaven. Saturn from here runs the chart: hard-working, responsible, ambitious. These are visible qualities that she deploys. She is a parent, a manager.

And here’s the thing: Harris’s Saturn lines up exactly with the American Moon. This means that she, and the people of the United States, are in a parent-child relationship. She feels like a guardian. It’s no wonder she has spent a life in the law, creating and enforcing rules. The US Moon also clicks right into that beautiful Grand Trine running from Ascendant to Sun to Moon. She fits right in as a president.

Harmoniously balancing that serious Saturn, her Sun is in the 5th house of fun and laughter.  The latest meme Kamala IS Brat, courtesy of Charli XCX,  is literally an expression of that playful Sun in the 5th house of children, combined with Gemini Rising,  Her opponents are circulating videos of her laughing (like that’s a bad thing?). She really is the fresh, chartreuse, youthful answer to old orange. Must have been a fun step-mother!

Can She Win?
That, of course, is the question. The answer is “yes”, but it’s going to be nasty. With her Mars in Leo and Aries Moon, she is brave enough for this battle, and it’s going to take grit to face down the Lovecraftian unpleasantness emanating from Mar-a-Lago. Donald Trump is a lucky, lucky man, with current powerful transits taking him right through to the election, and a lot of powerful people backing him. But he is beatable, probably partly because of his own mistakes. Choosing JD Vance as his Vice Presidential nominee was an error. Vance is smart as a tack, but hungry for adulation.

Harris has solid transits from Saturn and Jupiter on election day. But they are not a hundred percent stellar. She needs to choose a Vice President who gives her another boost. I’ve only briefly scanned some of the charts — there is a lot of talent to choose from in the Democratic Party — but on a cursory look quite a few have the astrological chops to back her up and take on Trump. Pete Buttigieg, Mark Kelly, Andy Beshear, Gavin Newsome all bring something to the party. I suspect Buttigieg will also be in action between the election and the inauguration in some important capacity.

However, there is a real kicker to Harris’ transits. The god of change and electricity, Uranus, is on her natal Jupiter throughout the proceedings. Uranus turns retrograde on 1 September, probably locking her in as the change candidate, and then it just slides back to her Jupiter and scoops it up, turning direct at 23° on 30 January.

Kamala Harris has always been a woman of destiny — she has the North Node on her Ascendant in Gemini, which means she has news to bring to the world, a message, something to learn and something to teach. Her voice is going to get a lot louder from May onwards, when Jupiter moves into her First House.

As a friend said, we haven’t seen this much joy in America since 2008. Pluto started a long hard road that year and it is completing.

Obama does not descend from enslaved people but Kamala does via Jamaica. I think there is some deeper historical layer here about ex-British colonies, capitalism, uprising. A very huge worm is turning.

Buttegieg (boo-tuh-jej) is brilliant but is he too different? Newsom is more California and she needs to balance the ticket. Kelly could provide a moderate appeal as could Beshear.

    • Christina says:

I agree about Buttegieg. He has got Sun at 29° Capricorn and Venus at 1° Aquarius. This is exactly where Pluto is in action over the coming months, so he will either disappear or become much more powerful. I am not sure the country is ready for that ticket either. My bet would be on Beshear or Kelly.

  2. Laurie says:

Amazing thank you!! I’m grateful to see all this positivity – cannot bear the thought of her losing, feeling so hopeful for once! Re last sentence, do you mean May 2025?

(ps warming to Kelly, though I’d prefer he keep his senate seat. I think the astronaut speaking to the frailty and beauty of earth to push climate action could be incredibly powerful. Also bullish on Beshear who is so conservative- coded. Think Pete will be absolutely essential and may be pres one day, but no one is ready for a double woman ticket or a woman and a gay man, sadly)

People do not like KH her polling numbers are in single digits, but she has mighty bargaining power now..Obama has not endorsed KH. My guess is that just before the convention she will be removed and either HRC or Michelle Obama will be the nominee the Democrats will
‘ select not elect ‘ their pick. The carrot for KH to step aside will be the offer of Sonia Sotomayor ( she will resign ) seat in the Supreme Court..it amazes me that so many astrologers are all looking at the same sky and predict completely different outcomes, how can this be ?

Many thanks a very thought provoking article

Very difficult election, I’m glad I’m not in America and I don’t have to make the choice between one pro-Israel candidate and another. I see the Israel lobby has donated over $5M to Kamala Harris, which is much more than they donated to Trump. So Israel chooses Kamala. Biden got over $11M.
I’m a uranus/pluto baby too and also have Mars in the third house and Mercury in Scorpio. I do see mistakes quickly. It’s like they pop out with spotlights on them. Not always, I miss my own typos sometimes, but that’s what it’s like for me when I notice something. It might be the same for her. And it’s funny, I have Libra AC with NN in Gemini. My Saturn is in Pisces though. Just had my Saturn Return. Nothing happened. Didn’t notice anything. Quite glad!
I looked at the VP candidates, they all support Israel.
This is going to be difficult for America. Whoever wins could face arrest for complicity. So it could be that each party wants to lose the election so the other gets in trouble. I have seen people wonder why Dems are trying to lose.
Another thing is the lesser of two evils is the road to fascism. America could be looking at what nearly happened in France.
I think all this has something to do with the Pluto return America is going through. Israel is dragging the entire US empire down along with the West (Global North, international community). There are already books and articles on the ‘fall of the West’.
Global power is shifting. BRICS is getting stronger. All this will take time, years and years. As will the cases at the ICJ.
I heard someone ask who do we want as leader as things collapse? Who do we want to rebuild? If the leader is Trump, Project 2025 gives us some idea of his vision. If the leader is Kamala Harris, we can reasonably expect something fairer.
I believe in the sisterhood, but I don’t like tokenism. If a woman is to be president, I want her to be the right person for the job. Her gender isn’t enough, I need to see ability. I haven’t seen enough of Kamala Harris over recent years to make the call. All attention has been on Biden. So to me, I’m going to learn about her now through her campaign. I’m starting from a position of not being impressed so far.
    But then that Pluto return.
I remember the uranus/pluto square years that I went through, when everything collapsed around me and I went through hell. It was horrendous. But it needed to happen. The old had to go. I’m still waiting for new to appear. I’m not in the abyss anymore, thank goodness!, but neither am I anywhere happy and jolly. It’s like a kind of no man’s land where I have found peace but nothing has been built yet. But then I never had a plan or vision. I have left it to fate to bring me what it will.
So if I take my experience, everything that America is going through, who the candidates are, who wins, it all has to happen, no matter how we feel about it. I have deep respect for Pluto now! In a weird way, I trust it.
Very difficult election. I don’t envy our American friends. I support everyone who opposes the genocide. Everyone has a different idea of how to fight it. I don’t think there is a right or wrong there, every idea is a good idea.
Thanks, Christina. Food for thought. 🙂

Thank Christina, this is literally stellar! ✨🤩🔥

Did you see the clips online with her dancing and the other ones with her cooking? There’s one clip where she talks to the cameraman or producer how to prep a turkey, while the line for an interview is being set up. She seamlessly switches from “lather that baby up (with salt and pepper)“ to vice-presidential mode like the total pro she is.

Btw she doesn’t like being called step-mother – to the kids she’s “Momala” … and I so love it. 🥰

  6. Nancy Morrison says:

Excellent character analysis and overview of Kamala’s natal chart. Clearly she’ll get the female boomer vote and the DEI vote however Kamala’s record as VP is weak. The most divisive and pressing issue in this campaign is the Border which she was in charge of. She also failed to get Voter Regulation legislation passed through Congress whether by incapacity or intention. Failure in both of her assignments! We have twice as many illegal aliens as we had freed slaves after the Civil War to incorporate into the fabric of American society and we are still working with that issue so many years later. This shadow (America’s PL return) and future Uranus return may be spoken of in some of the other comments and is surely something that Kamala both embodies and needs to deal with. Thank you for a thorough natal reading. Aloha…Nancy, née 10/20

    • Christina says:

Yes. She will need to deal with that critique for sure. I was very impressed with her questioning of Brett Kavanaugh when she was a senator, and then when she became VP it was as if she went into a silent space. The border certainly does seem to be a catastrophe and she never had the powers to deal with it. It will take a sweeping program. I listened to an interesting podcast today about how the situation in Venezuela over the past decade has exacerbated the problems at the Mexico-US border, and in turn how the continuing crisis there is exacerbated by US sanctions. It’s all horribly circular, and clearly needs more than a quick fix at the actual border to be addressed. It’s similar to the horrendous problem in the Mediterranean every summer.

I agree with you — she needs to embody the Uranus — and the Pluto! — which she can do as a Gen Xer. She has to become the radical, future-oriented change, be Pluto in Aquarius.

  7. Isy says:

“From your mouth, to God’s ear!”

I feel more positive about the outlook, seeing how her chart lines up with the times. Yes, it will be unthinkably ugly, and I’m not looking forward to that.

It’d be good to see T overreach himself so far that he ends his own delirious career.

  8. From your mouth to Goddess’ ears! Thank you for the analysis.

  9. Dd says:

I see a lot of people breathlessly heralding the movement of pluto into Aquarius as the gateway to progressive nirvana rescuing the world from the influence of Trump and patriarchal meanie Capricorn. I’ve had several visions on this, and I am coming to terms with what those visions suggest, which is a considerably different picture. The right of women to vote in the west came during the Cancer era of pluto, heralding the triumph of first wave feminism. The world since that time, has become a place increasingly moved and centered on feminine energy and women’s power. In this way, our society has moved like the day/night cycle from the Summer Solstice onward. Day, or masculine Yang energy, ever decreasing, as Night, or feminine Yin energy, carves out an inexorably larger portion of the 24 hours as time proceeds. The fiery Yang had weakened, at first, imperceptibly, and then in a noticeable way as summer yields to oncoming Yin through the fall and ultimately winter. Capricorn marks the Winter Solstice, when that process must reverse. Many in these circles looked at the Capricorn pluto age as the involuntary last gasps of a dying patriarchy, one last speed bump on the road to our girlboss utopia. I sincerely believe that it was nothing less than a vibrational Solstice, the firm hand of father Saturn saying “Stop. This has gone far enough, girls.” . The pendulum, hitting the highest point, and now reversing direction, if you will.

Where were you the night Madame President failed to shatter the world’s pre-eminent glass ceiling? What did you feel? That very palpable shockwave of energy was Capricorn, father Saturn, setting things up to move the other way, I’m afraid. Have you taken the time to talk to a young man recently? Not one you know, who would hold back out of respect. Talk to a stranger, one not obligated to hold his tongue to keep his paycheck. They are angry, so very, very angry. They are bubbling with rage and resentment at a world they feel abandoned and rejected them. A world that they are inevitably bound to collide with and reshape, for better or worse. Men, in general, appear to be rejecting the premise of feminism wholesale, with the rejection growing stronger as we move younger down the age brackets. I never thought Trump could win that night. What was happening? Why?

Visions take time to manifest, to bear the fruits of their secrets. Did you know that when the Taliban took over again there were teenage boys ecstatically revelling online in their lighting conquest? From the comfort of suburban California homes? By that time, the answer crystalized in earnest.

Watch a video of a pendulum in motion. Slow it down. Focus on the end of the swing. At a slow enough playback, the pendulum appears to just hang there aimlessly in space. It can be genuinely difficult to determine if it even moves at all at first. But, at some point the motion and direction appear. The pendulum moves – and begins to speed up.

Pluto in Aquarius is that aimless hanging pendulum now speeding up and moving in the opposite swing with increasing clarity. Make peace with it. To everything there is a season, and seasons will change. Your great-granddaughters will be there, way on the other side of the arc, waving from the distant maternal pole of Cancer, and one day, their great-grandsons will be here again, breathlessly cascading down from Capricorn once more. The cycle of history will proceed, and in moments great and small, we will find the elements of compassion, peace and understanding between Yin and Yang.

    • Christina says:

Thank you so much for this long and thoughtful comment. I hope you don’t mind: I put in a few paragraph returns to make your remarks easier to read on a screen. They are very interesting, and what you say about Cancer, Capricorn and the concept of solstice is very important. It’s good to look at Pluto in this broad way.

I would take an even longer view of the Pluto cycle though. For example, it has been millennia that women have been essentially second class. During that time there have been many cycles of Pluto through Cancer and Capricorn. And I think it is more complex than a pendulum swing. Yes, women in many countries got the right to vote, started going out to work and upturning some societal constraints last time Pluto was in Cancer (1914-1937), but “Kinder, Kuche, Kirche” was a central concept in the Third Reich, for example, and Italian feminism has taken years to recover from the Mussolini years which began in 1922. So there was a big backlash then too.

Under this Pluto in Capricorn transit, we have seen a great rise in female authority — from the re-evaluation of women’s history in art, music and science to real political power around the globe. At the same time, we have seen a rise in misogyny from Andrew Tate to Afghanistan. One is reflecting the other.
