About Me

Who are you?

I’m Christina Rodenbeck, a consulting astrologer with more than 20 years experience. I’ve been writing this blog since 2010. I am also an author: my next book is coming out in September. And I also record a podcast every month. You can find out how I became an astrologer here. And more about me on the home page.

I assume all my readers are intelligent, discerning, curious, capable of critical thinking, and love a gorgeous picture. What you get in return is authenticity, beauty, originality, imagination, expertise and experience; wide, rich cultural references and context; a big archive of material going back more than a decade; good writing — and a deep instinct for astrological truth. I try my best to make the complexity of astrology as transparent as possible without dumbing anything down.

I have been fascinated by astrology my whole life, and a practicing astrologer since the early 2000s.

You can book a personal reading here.

I do. Please send me an email outlining your proposal.

I have my own podcast, and I have been a guest on the BBC on many occasions. I also give lectures every now and then — at the Astrological Association, Astrological Lodge, Scottish Astrological Association and Aquarian Severne. And I have taught several courses in Beijing.

My book on Lilith will be published by the Wessex Astrologer in the autumn. You can buy a copy here.

Astrology Talk Podcast

What is the Astrology Talk Podcast about?

My friend Sally Kirkman and I talk about astrology twice a month. In the main podcast, we discuss the astrology of the month ahead, and the current zeitgeist. And in Astrology Talk Investigates, we tackle a single question.

We release the main pod on 18th of every month, and a supplementary Astrology Talk Investigates mini-pod on 8th of every month.

You can listen to them on any podcast platform, go straight to podbean or watch on our YouTube channel.

You can send in questions by filling in the form below.

Astrological Services

What can I expect from an astrology session?

You should expect a conversation with me in which we work together to unpick the meaning of your chart. I will explain the astrology as we go along, and we will synthesise the symbols of the chart and see how they are working in your real life. I will probably ask you some questions as we go along, and I expect you to ask me questions too. We may look at current transits, or deep into the past. Sessions are flowing, and allow us to follow where the spirit takes us.

If you would like your session recorded, I will do so. Most people choose to keep a recording to refer to. Recordings are for your benefit. I don’t keep recordings longer than a few months

You can choose an hour or an hour and a half.

I often see couples, and many consultations are entirely focused on relationships. I also do a lot of work with family constellations.

I offer a Birth Chart readings, Birthday, Black Moon Lilith, Goddess Asteroids, Year Ahead. You can go to the full menu here.

There is really no fixed answer to this. For some people, it’s one and done. They just need that initial focus on their chart and they are off. However, many people come to see me on a regular basis, once or twice a year, once a month — or once every few months. Others come when they find themselves in a particular situation, and may find they need to book several sessions to work through it.

You will need your time, date and place of birth.

No, I only read charts in conversation with my clients.

Yes. You can buy a gift consultation here.

This can be one of the main uses of astrology. When you are at a cross-roads in life, astrology helps you to get a clear view of yourself, your circumstances and how you could respond.

Make sure you have your date, time and place of birth. We will record the session if you like. And make sure you won’t be interrupted.

Not at the moment but I may be in the future.

You can book a session here.

General Astrology

What is astrology and how does it work?

Astrology is the study of our relationship to the skies. The ancient dictum, “As above, so below” encapsulates the central thesis of astrology, to wit the movements of the planets and stars, in relationship to earth, affect us. Whether this is direct rays from the planets, or more mysterious synchronicity, is up for debate.

Your Sun sign shows which sign of the Zodiac the Sun is passing through at the time of your birth. The Sun stays in that sign for about a month. Your Rising sign is the sign of the zodiac that was coming over the horizon at the time you were born. This changes every couple of hours. So you see how the Rising sign is much more personal.

Astrology can be extremely accurate, but it’s not infallible, because so much is up to interpretation, and there are many moving parts.

Astrology does predict the future — broadly. It can tell you about the spirit of the times, and potential. It can also help with timing decisions. But astrology is not fixed. It evolves and adapts in quite an organic way. It’s not immutable. So your destiny is not determined at birth, but potentials are marked there. Much depends on your circumstances, what happens around you through your life, and simply how you respond to your chart.

The birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. It’s a schematic map of the sky — like, say, an Underground map of London. It’s important because it shows all the potential of you are born with. This will evolve as you age, but the birth (or natal) chart will always be your core.

Saturn is a very slow moving planet and it only comes back to the same position it was in when you were born every 28 or so years. So you may have three Saturn Returns in your life if you live a long time. Each Saturn Return is the closing of a chapter of your life, and a step into greater maturity.

The first comes at the end of your twenties, and is often a time when you step into real adulthood — ready to commit to a partner, a family, a career. Often, in order to do this, you need to leave some things behind, end some relationships, or even go back to school.

The second Saturn Return happens in your mid to late fifties, and is usually a moment when you step into being an elder, or some kind of mastery. It can also be a moment when you really feel your age, and the physical body begins to need much more serious maintenance.

The third Saturn Return comes at the end of your eighties and now you have arrived in the true age of Saturn, a planet which actually rules old age. There are rewards — wisdom, perspective — and if you accept your status as an elder, joy. This may also be a point when the sheer grind of the aging body feels really tough. Get through this Saturn Return, and you’ve arrived at a new stage of maturity.

A planet is in retrograde when it appears to move backwards from our vantage point on Earth. This happens regularly with all planets because they orbit the Sun at different speeds.

When a planet starts to turn retrograde it may actually intensify its action. Once in actual retrograde, it may act quite differently than when in direct motion. This will depend on the sign in which it is moving.

Listen to an Astrology Talk Investigates podcast about retrograde planets.

A Lunar eclipse is a very tight Full Moon — when Sun and Moon oppose each other close to where the orbit of the Moon actually crosses the path of the Sun. This happens twice a year, at two opposite points in the sky. So you will get four eclipses a year — Solar and Lunar.

An eclipse signifies sudden change: the opening or closing of a door. The Lunar eclipse is often a moment when tempers flare, the cat jumps out of that bag, a secret is revealed, a diagnosis is confirmed. They tend to accelerate events in a certain part of your life.

A Solar Return chart is cast for the day the Sun comes back to exactly the degree it was in when you were born. This is often on your birthday, but, because of leap years, it may be the day before or after.

Every sign is ruled by one or two planets. Your chart ruler is the planet which rules your Rising Sign. It’s activated when this planet in your birth chart receives aspects from a transiting planet. For example, if you have Cancer Rising, your ruling planet is the Moon. Your Moon would be activated whenever another planet touches it.

Rulerships

Aries — Mars

Taurus — Venus

Gemini — Mercury

Cancer — Moon

Leo — Sun

Virgo — Mercury

Libra — Venus

Scorpio — Mars and Pluto

Sagittarius — Jupiter

Capricorn — Saturn

Aquarius — Saturn and Uranus

Pisces — Jupiter and Neptune

A yod is a pattern between three planets that creates an isosceles triangle. Two planet forming the base are 60° apart, and they both make aspects to a planet at the apex of the triangle.

It is a very dynamic and potentially creative aspect which puts a lot of pressure on that planet at the apex. It often shows a particular talent, which you will have to express. It can also show you a direction that you will take in life. Quite often it may feel as if you have no control over this aspect, instead it impels you.

A Grand Trine is very harmonious aspect between three planets which creates an equilateral triangle. All the planets will be close to 120° apart, creating a smooth flowing energy. This means that all these aspects of a person’s life may work in concert, so much so, that the individual hardly notices the talent or luck that comes with this aspect.

The T-square, in contrast, is a dynamic aspect between three planet that creates an equilateral triangle with a powerful 180° opposition as its base. The planet at the apex of the triangle will be at 90° to both planets at the base. These are all considered “hard” aspects, which sounds harsh, but actually creates dynamic tension. This can be a challenging aspect, but it is actually very common, and adds energy and thrust to a chart.

Chiron’s astronomical definition does keep changing. Currently it’s classed as a comet. It was discovered in 1977 and named after the centaur Chiron, who was the teacher of heroes. Astrologically, it can show our Achilles heel, the place we are wounded. And if this wounding is addressed it can also become a talent or strength. Chiron shows up powerfully in the charts of doctors, nurses and therapists.

According to traditional astrology, each planet is at its best or worst in certain signs. These are known as the “essential dignities”. A planet may be “exalted”, in rulership, “in detriment”, or in “fall”. In fact, not all tables of essential dignities agree. A planet in the sign of it rules is strong. When it is in the sign opposite its rulership, it is said to be weaker and in “detriment.” So, for example, Venus rules Taurus and Libra. She is in detriment in Aries, the opposite sign to Libra, and in fall in Scorpio, the opposite sign to Taurus. It’s important at this point to note that the ancients may have had some quite rigid ideas about appropriate behaviour. So having Venus in detriment may simply make a person a very fierce and passionate lover. Audrey Hepburn — who was famously kind and polite — had Venus Retrograde in Aries. So she may have been kind to a fault, but she was certainly no scarlet woman.

Your Saturn Return is when Saturn returns exactly to the degree he was in when you were born. But you are likely to feel your Saturn Return coming as soon as Saturn reaches the same sign that he was in when you were born. He will stay in that sign for about two and a half years, and probably won’t be until he actually leaves that you feel the process of maturing that is the Saturn Return completes.

Because Saturn is frequently retrograde, he may well go back and forth over your personal Saturn degree up to five times, which means your Saturn Return is a process. Usually, the first hit is the most surprising, and each time Saturn goes over that degree you may feel more confident. The key to a Saturn Return is taking responsibility for your actions, your attitudes and your life.

Every 18 months, she turns retrograde for 40 days (a very significant number). Read more about the incredible five-pointed Venus cycle here.

If you were born with Venus retrograde, this is likely to add intensity and introspection to the things of Venus — love, friendships, art, money, for example. Although you may have challenges around these themes, you may also find that you have a deep talent associated with Venus.

When Venus retrogrades by transit, this may affect these themes as well. It’s often a good time to reassess your finances and your love life. Old loves may turn up, and money that went missing may reappear. It’s a great time to mend bridges, make peace and generally say sorry!

It’s not a good time to get a facelift or start a beauty treatment. It’s also not a particularly good time to go shopping — unless you’re getting something second-hand. Definitely hold back on the big-ticket items.

Venus Retrogrades will be especially important if you have a lot of Libra or Taurus in your chart. You should definitely down tools for a while and rest. Use this opportunity every couple of years for some self-care and alone time.

Three times a year. Generally, Mercury retrogrades in the same element through a year. So 2025 is a fire Mercury year, and 2026 will be a water Mercury year. Since Mercury Rx means that the little planet will likely spend much longer in certain signs, this preponderance of one element effects the whole year — especially if you have a lot of Virgo or Gemini in your chart.

Mercury retrogrades are very useful three-week periods for catching up. You may find lost objects, edit your manuscript, rest, recuperate and reconnect with friends. It’s also a time when secrets may come out and when you may need to mind what you say, double check your appointments, or give yourself extra time getting to places. This is because time can do funny things during the Mercury retrograde.

A great way to do this is to sign up to my horoscopes. I write a complete horoscope for all the Sun signs once a month. For a more precise view, you can look on Astrodienst, cast your own chart, and call up the transits. Or you can book a personal consultation with me.

Yes. This is one of the most important uses of astrology. It helps you to know yourself — and forgive yourself. Sometimes you’re just made that way.

Western and Vedic (Indian) astrology are closely related. They share similar definitions of the planets and signs, and both are based on interpretations of astronomical data. However, Vedic astrology has moved the signs 23° forward over millenia, as the real constellations have moved. In contrast, Western astrology is based around the path of the Sun, and the four corners of the year — the solstices and equinoxes that begin the cardinal signs.

Vedic astrology also makes use of the 27 Mansions of the Moon, which have fallen out of favour in the West, and has multiple techniques of combining planetary influences with very specific definitions. Western astrology tends to pay closer attention to exact degrees, precise aspects but at the same time on synthesising the whole chart.

There are also important cultural differences. Vedic astrology has focused strongly on compatibility because of the centrality of marriage in Indian culture — and also on remedies said to counteract difficult chart aspects. So your astrologer may also be selling you gemstones, prayers or charms. Astrology is deeply embedded in Hinduism, and highly respected, in direct contrast to the way astrology became a pariah practice in the West.
Western astrology has focused a great deal more on psychology, personal development and self-knowledge. A Western approach to astrology may focus much more on how you can work with the planets and less on how you can combat or counteract them with remedies.

Most Western astrologers also include the outer planets — Pluto, Uranus and Neptune — and many include the comet Chiron and some asteroids.
In my experience, a key difference is flexibility. Vedic astrologers may come to fixed conclusions, whereas Western astrology tends to be much more open-ended.

Ottoman and Arab astrology come from the same place as Western astrology and essentially follow the same rules.
